Bio

Nayib Bukele was mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán and then of San Salvador before he was elected president, taking office on June 1, 2019.[1]

On June 5, 2021, in a video shown at a bitcoin conference in Miami, he said he would send Congress a bill to make bitcoin legal tender. The Bitcoin Law passed on June 8 and took effect on September 7, 2021, with the government's Chivo wallet. The day before, he said the state held 400 bitcoin.[2][3][4]

In November 2021 he announced a planned Bitcoin City in La Unión, to be funded by a bitcoin-backed bond; the bond was later postponed. In November 2022 he said the government would buy one bitcoin a day.[5][6]

In January 2025 the Bitcoin Law was amended to make private acceptance voluntary, and in February the IMF approved a US$1.4 billion program that limits the state's bitcoin purchases. See our El Salvador page for the full record and current holdings.[11][7]

A 2021 ruling by Supreme Court judges appointed by his party's legislators allowed him to seek a second consecutive term despite a constitutional ban, which critics opposed; he won in a landslide in February 2024 and began his second term on June 1, 2024, amid concerns about democratic backsliding.[8][9][10]
